FAQs

What got you started doing CrossFit?
I'm a member of the Bar Harbor Fire Department Call Force. While advancing hose up some stairs, I realized I needed to do something about my fitness. In my opinion, my stamina and strength weren’t good enough for my firefighting responsibilities, so I joined CFA. I also realized that I needed to be a better role model for my family by getting into shape.
Why do you stay with it?
I feel better mentally and physically when I'm exercising.
Why do you Crossfit and what do you like most about it?
I've always had a hard time going to the gym and figuring out what I need to do to get in a well-rounded workout. I love that I can walk into CFA and my entire workout is spelled out for me, the coaches are watching me to make sure I'm being safe, and the community is there to get me to push a little harder.
We all have goals-what are you working towards?
I'm always working towards stronger lungs.
How long have you been doing Crossfit?
I joined CFA in the Spring of 2016.
How do you get through/what is the most difficult/frustrating WOD?
I get through some of the most difficult and frustrating WODS by focusing on what I want to get out of each workout. Setting appropriate goals and figuring out how to achieve them. My goals change daily and they aren't always about a fast time, high reps, or heavy weights. More often than not, my goal is to finish smoothly and with good form. This is helpful when a workout looks too difficult and needs to be scaled. I try to keep my ego out of everything and focus on the real reasons why I show up: my family and my department.
What workout really gets you excited when you walk into the box?
I like anything that includes rowing, pull-ups, rope climbs, and handstand push-ups. I like lifting during WODs but I prefer doing moves that rely on my bodyweight.
Your favorite CrossFit movement and your most dreaded CF movement?
My favorite movement and most dreaded movement are the same: the squat snatch. There is no better feeling than dropping into this movement. But getting there can be really frustrating.
What eating plans do you follow and what is your typical "go to" meal/snack?
Nutrition is tough for me. I'm currently planning on doing Zone. The issue: I love to cook. Figuring out meals that let me cook multi-ingredient meals while giving me the blocks I need is challenging.
What is your favorite cheat?
Pizza and ice cream, but not together.
What made you want to get your L1?
I want to give people what has been given to me: support while becoming a healthier version of myself. I wouldn't be where I am without the amazing coaches at CFA. I want to pay that forward. I also want to help people become more confident and reach their goals inside and outside of the box.
What hobbies do you have/ What do you do when you're not crossfitting ?
Hiking and biking with my family, gardening, and cooking. I also record/produce music for local musicians and run sound for live events (which is part of what I do at my full-time job).
What is your favorite color?
Earth tones. I like blending in.
